What does VOC have to do with painting?

What does VOC have to do with painting?

We are all conscious of air quality.  If you were born before the 60’s, you remember people being able to smoke in restaurants, stores and even passenger jets.  Gradually, smoking was outlawed in all of these areas because of the dangers of second-hand smoke to others.  In the same way, paint as it is drying is releasing compounds into the air.  They are commonly referred to as Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs.  Like smoking in public, we now understand the dangers of releasing these compounds into the air.

The Colours of Downton Abby

The Colours of Downton Abby

Beginning its fourth year this fall, the hit series Downton Abby is influencing our taste in wall colors.   The series uses a real life mansion, Highclere Castle in Hampshire, England with little change. Elegant wall colors, wall paper and furniture from the Edwardian period and beautiful tapestries adorn the walls.  Viewing this opulence each week has fueled our appetite for a similar rich and royal look.  And the palette of bright colors and pale hues are thoroughly usable in today’s homes.

An alternative projection screen

An alternative projection screen

One of the tasks that specialty painters have learned to do recently is to apply special coatings to imitate a movie screen. With the advent of 1080 video projectors for less than a thousand dollars, there is a need for a quality screen at a comparable price. The cost of larger manufactured screens is significant and the possibility of reproducing an alternative at a fraction of the cost has motivated many to explore this option.

Bad Advice on the Internet

Bad Advice on the Internet

I recently read a blog on Home Advisorz (Something Similar) concerning exterior painting techniques that astounded me.  It was written by a man who said he was formerly a house painter and yet the advice he offered was completely wrong.  What did he say?

Eco-friendliness and sustainability are big concerns here in California—Irvine is no exception. Over the years, a number of products have been released, all across the spectrum, contributing to the “green economy.” The same is true for the paint industry. Eco-friendly paints are now quite common. But, how does a commercial or industrial business owner know what to choose?

Set Coat Metallics and Cabinets with metallic paint finishes

We recently finished a project with Faux Effects Metallic Paints.  Wow!  The finished painted look was simply amazing.  Set Coat Metallics can be used as a wall finish, trim paint finish or cabinet finish.  The cabinets we finished were an oyster color with the walls lined in pencil board trim and metallic to the finished surface of the wall were slightly darker.  We based coated mdf material with a filler primer and then sanded smooth with a bonding primer.  The metallic paint finish has just enough shimmer to look great with fabrics and wood.   Metallic paints are recommended for creating any classic decorative finish with a slight dramatic edge.  Metallic paints and coatings can add that special edge you are looking for in a few coats of paint.
